Shea butter is often called 'women's gold' in West Africa, where it has been used by women for thousands of years. It is derived from the nuts of the shea tree (Vitellaria paradoxa). Women collect, crack, roast, and grind the nuts into a paste, then knead it with water to extract the butter. This process is traditionally done by women in cooperatives. The yellow shea butter gets its hue from borututu root, which is said to have medicinal properties and stronger antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. The ivory shea butter is the raw, unadulterated form.
