Description
- African Black Soap: Our black soap with lemongrass is an authentic African remedy, made from locally harvested plantain peels, cocoa pod ash, shea butter, and palm oil. This time-honored formula provides gentle yet effective cleansing and exfoliation. The soap’s dark color comes from the ash, which contains potassium hydroxide that saponifies the oils. It’s known to help soothe irritated skin, reduce acne and blemishes, and restore a healthy glow. African black soap has been used for generations in West African cultures for its purifying and healing properties.
- African Black Soap: Handcrafted into bars weighing approximately 200g (7 oz) each. Each bar is about 10 cm (4 inches) long, 5 cm (2 inches) wide, and 2.5 cm (1 inch) thick. The soap has a dark brown color with visible flecks of ash and a slight nutty aroma from the shea butter. It is made with natural, plant-based ingredients (no synthetic fragrances or chemicals), scented with lemongrass and is designed to last with proper care. The bar is cut by hand from a large batch, ensuring each piece is unique in weight and shape.
- African Black Soap: Wet your skin with warm water. Rub the bar of black soap between your hands or a loofah to create a lather. Gently massage the lather onto your skin in circular motions. Black soap has natural exfoliating particles, so it will help slough off dead skin cells while cleansing. Rinse thoroughly with water. For best results, use black soap 2-3 times a week. After use, keep the soap bar dry between uses by placing it on a soap dish with good drainage. This helps extend the life of the bar. Avoid leaving the soap in standing water, as it can cause the soap to soften or dissolve prematurely.
- African Black Soap – Ancient Cleanser: African black soap has been used for over 5,000 years and is one of the oldest soaps in the world. It was first invented by the Yoruba people of Nigeria and is deeply intertwined with West African culture. The soap is made by burning plantain peels, palm leaves, and cocoa pods to create potash (ash), which provides the alkaline needed for saponification. These ashes are mixed with water and combined with natural oils like coconut oil, palm oil, and shea butter. The mixture is cooked and stirred continuously for at least 24 hours, during which natural saponification occurs. The result is a lumpy, dark soap that is then cured for several weeks. The dark color and earthy aroma come from the ash and shea butter. This soap was traditionally used not just for cleansing but also for medicinal purposes – it was applied to wounds and skin irritations, and even used as a baby wash. Today, it remains beloved for its ability to deeply cleanse without stripping the skin of its natural oils. Our black soap bars are handcrafted by artisans, preserving the ancient recipe and the communal spirit of soap-making.
- Authenticity and Identity: By proudly using African ingredients and honoring traditional recipes, our products celebrate South Africa’s unique identity. They are not just generic skincare items, but a statement of pride in the country’s heritage. Whether it’s the earthy aroma of black soap or the gentle scent of lemongrass in the bar, each product carries a piece of South Africa’s natural and cultural landscape. They are uniquely South African because they are born from the land and the people of this continent, blending history with modern appeal.
